During the latest visit in the Heat (Shangri-la Plaza Hotel), I was able to try their featured dessert: Raspberry Molten Brownie Double Shot Vodka Cheesecake.

The name is a mouthful but I don't mind. You really have to include all of them because it does contribute to how good it was.

I took just a small slice from the small squared cheesecake but it was more than good enough for me. It was so rich and thick that I even have to slow down to taste every bit of it.

With the pipette, you can drizzle it over the cake, inject the fluid or squeeze them in your mouth.

Through the years, I've noticed that there are a fewer people eating in hotel buffets after the emergence of more affordable restaurants with their own smorgasbord. But sometimes, it's okay to splurge on the better stuff.

This is probably a late post for almost everyone since people have tried the Japanese green tea version of KitKat already. About two years ago, my parents came from their trip and they bought the a bag of bite sized KitKat with different out-of-this-world flavours.

I'm usually open when it comes to different kinds of food. It doesn't mean that I have to like them. I've tried and I've made up my mind that I don't like the green tea flavoured KitKat. I'd rather stick to the original chocolate version.

More than a week ago, my brother and sister came from Japan and they bought home boxes of Uji Matcha flavoured KitKat (that makes me the only one in the family that hasn't been to that country). Everyone liked the green tea version which until now, could not understand.

During our visit to her grandparents house, she got this from the small fridge upstairs. She wanted to try these because she thought it will turn her into her favourite Clumsy Ninja. I didn't know she could identify the Japanese characters on the box and relate it to her Clumsy Ninja app.

When she tried it, her face crumpled in disgust but she swallowed them anyway. She said she didn't want it because it tasted like leaves. I didn't even know that she knows how leaves taste.

When my husband and I picked her up from school, we headed to the nearest branch in C.Raymundo Ave, Pasig. We were really looking forward to just eating pizza for lunch. No plans in ordering anything else, not even a soda to go along with the pizza.

However, the waitress encouraged us to try their new onion rings which caused PHP99.00 "only".

After trying it out, I thought it was overpriced at PHP99.00.

I honestly was looking forward to trying out their Onion Rings with the regular onion rings in my mind. I got all excited when I saw so many onion rings in their big basket. It was really a big disappointment. I even stopped my husband from finishing it all.

Pizza is fattening enough. Some people would consider it belonging to the Junk Food category. I kind of agree. But this new addition to Shakeys menu would belong to the Health Hazard category. It's too fatty and it's too salty. Their batter is comparable to the instant chicken batter people use at home. The mayo dip was a must because it kind of hide the saltiness but definitely won't wash the salt on each piece of onion rings.

On the second photo, you could see the oil dripping from each one. I had to tap them on my plate just so I could let go of the excess oil. But I know that wouldn't be enough. Better squeeze each one before putting them in your mouth.

I wish they would improve the recipe. I would love to try it out again if only they could guarantee that it's not going to be too salty.

Chai Tea Frappe is one of the most underrated drinks of Starbucks. I don't seem to hear people asking for it that often as much as their glucose-bombarded coffee drinks that they have.

I visited Starbucks today with the aim of getting on that one-month reading backlog (that entails a lot of catching up).

First purchase was a hot white chocolate mocha drink with less shuger!

Second purchase was Hot Chai Tea. I haven't tasted Chai for so many months (probably years now) and today, I was reminded on how good the aroma as well as the taste of it was.

The Barista, the expert that they were, suggested soy milk instead of their regular milk. Sure why not? I didn't bother adding the two packets of honey they gave me because it was good enough on it's own.

Just a warning though. It gets a bit bitter when you don't consume it that fast enough. I left the tea bag inside while drinking and never bothered to pull it out. Chew On Thishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07186938437787030767noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1325388481027718008.post-62590720794008729502016-01-27T17:51:00.002-08:002016-01-27T17:53:03.635-08:00Trail MixesI'm a fan of trail mixes. However, the branded bags that we get to buy in the supermarkets are either non existent or too pricey for any regular Juan.

Yesterday, I had a big pack of Sugo spicy peanuts from home. Before going up to the office, I passed by MiniStop to get some energy boosters (since work starts at past noon - the unholy hours). I grabbed two packs of M&Ms (along with Kopiko which is my favourite coffee drink at the moment).

I didn't know that I had a trail mix in the making in my bag. During our 10-minute break (yes, being a part-timer, I only get to enjoy 10 minutes break time), I decided to mix my Sugo and the chocolate candies. While munching, I was thinking that in my next trip to the supermarket, I'll probably look for other things to mix with this one like salted pretzels, crunchy breakfast cereals, corn chips etcetera. The list is limitless.

I was browsing Buzz Feed and I came across an article on the best comfort food there is: A list of soups that I can make (according to them) easily.

I tried the Chicken Vermicelli in spicy curry soup. This household loves spicy dishes that's why I chose it from the list. And besides, almost all of the ingredients are at hand.

I cooked the chicken in chicken broth plus coconut milk plus chili powder and ginger plus salt. And then added the vermicelli much later.

It was supposed to be a soup dish but the vermicelli absorbed most of the soup. Still, it's was as good as I hoped it would be especially when it was still hot from the stove.

I have two pizza phases. I call them Pizza Hut phase and Shakeys phase. Well, these past few months, it has been Shakeys thin crust pizzas.

My daughter has learned to love Shakeys thin crust. My husband and I always order their Friday's Special. Fish on pizza doesn't sound as appealing as when you actually taste it. For me, it's really the best one they have. I have to say, they do have the best thin crust around.

I've tried deep dish and pan pizzas but I always go back to the thin crust.

Shakeys C.Raymundo Branch

Taste: 5 / 5
I ordered my favourite. It was still a favourite when I left the pizza parlour.

Ambience: 4 / 5
It was crowded and noisy. Good thing, they didn't play loud music to add to the unsettling air.

Service: 3.5 / 5
The restaurant at that time was quite packed because of the Monday Madness over Chicken and Mojos promo. There were many servers and attendants but they couldn't seem to address all the customers waiting to be attended to.

Cost: 1 / 5
Still expensive as before. I actually think their pizzas are overpriced for so little ingredients. I realized during this visit that we don't need to buy the Supercard (only applicable for delivery and take out) which cost for about PHP2000. Prices go up when you order for take out and delivery. That means, pizzas cost more. In the long run, the P2000 you paid initially will cover all the cost of their regular priced items. It was really misleading.
I resorted to ratings online to determine which restaurant to try. And Ippudo came up with almost five stars.

There was so many raves about this restaurant. When I got there, they couldn't give me a seat inside because I was still waiting for my company. The receptionist didn't even offered the menu so that I could make up my mind of what to order while waiting inside.

I'm sure their food was great and wanted by a lot of people (who are aware of their existence) but then why make it harder for people who are already there and ready to take a whiff of their much talked about dishes.

Well, kudos to the server who knows all about their menu. For first-timers like me, I really rely on their recommendation. And he offered a truthful one. It's like they actually tried it themselves. They should. And it's a must. They should know what is good and what will make their customers come back.

I'm not a fan of gyoza. It hasn't impressed me from previous dining experiences. However, theirs was different. There were two types of gyoza that they're offering and for the life of me, I don't remember which one we had chosen. The photo above shows (you) the readers which one. And I highly recommend it to those visiting.

I'm supposed to rave about the noodles. However, my mother chose the ramen herself and denied me of the chance to choose the spicy ones. She chose the "creamy" ones instead. I had to order the rice topping, Unagi - another recommendation. And so, I have to come back for the ramen that I wanted.

And I'm going back there for the Gyoza too!

Ambiance: 5 out of 5

It really looked like a Japanese レストラン (resutoran) considering that Malay-looking Filipinos are serving our food.

Taste: 4 out of 5

It was truly a burst of flavours. Authenticity is a must if you're trying to eat food that you can only get if you travel miles away.

I'd have to say it was overpriced. We paid around two thousand pesos - the amount for a week's grocery for one bowl of ramen, two order of gyoza, two rice toppings in a hot metal bowl. It was just too much. The servings were really good for one.

My hubby prepares my lunch that I bring to work. Yes, I know how to eat food and I know how to criticise them but I don't know how to make them. Shame on me, I know.

Sometimes it becomes a problem for him - thinking of what to prepare for me. And so he, resorts to You Tube or Google for ideas.

One morning, he left me with this. I opened it up at work during my lunch break and it was a pleasant surprise. I love spicy food but this one just gives an impression that it is. The pimiento and the tuna meat inside was good!

I'm thinking he could put something else inside another time. That would be nice!Chew On Thishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07186938437787030767noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1325388481027718008.post-79888335230660220162015-02-18T17:51:00.001-08:002015-02-18T17:51:09.508-08:00Raw For Dinner

We couldn't decide what will be for dinner. He couldn't come up with anything from what we had in the freezer. It was basically because we weren't hungry.

He decides to go out of the house and visit the wet market at around 5pm in the afternoon. He came back with Yellow Fin tuna. Hooray for fish! I didn't want any more pork or beef.

He made Kinilaw for dinner. At first I was kind of anxious about him preparing and eating raw dishes because he hasn't done that for all 5 years that we were together.

Amazingly, he did it pretty well. So much ginger and green chilis! I LOVED IT.

I didn't eat with rice though. I didn't think it goes well with steamed rice. I ate it with Magic Flakes crackers. To each, his own.
Valentine's Day is a big deal for me and my husband. We make sure that we stay out of the house and join the rest of the huge population of Manila to dive in all that traffic and long lines in the mall.

Even if we are on a very tight budget, we were able to spare some for a movie and a late lunch.

This year, we decided to dine in the relatively long-standing small Japanese restaurant in the bridgeway of Megamall: Tokyo Cafe.

I had previous encounters with omurice in other restaurants but it didn't make that much impression on me as much as their version of the dish did.

Sticky rice was made more stickier with the chicken ala pobre that they mixed in their omelette rice. It was so tasty that it was good by itself. The serving is for two to three people. The egg was cooked just the way I liked it - cooked midway to well-done (if there's such a thing).

Ambiance: 3 out of 5
I prefer to dine in a quiet place to enjoy the food and company. However, it is in the most crowded part of the mall and the restaurant is so wide open, you can hear the noise from outside. However, I love their white furniture against the white walls (and from what I remember, some apple greens). The seemingly clean place is totally appealing.

Taste: 3 out of 5
I haven't tried all of their dishes. The omurice gets the 5 out of 5 score. However, the food presentation in the photos in their menu (particularly the sandwiches) wasn't the actual thing you'd get. We also ordered the interesting-looking sandwich, but when it came to our table, it was poorly prepared. It was a far cry from the photo in the menu (which was the main reason why I ordered it).

Service: 5 out of 5
I didn't have to ask for anything. They provided all that we needed.

Cost: 3 out of 5
The price is affordable. However, if the other dishes was like the sandwich we got, then they are over-priced.
I admit that I even think that McDonald's serve the best ones. However, my parents would like to get my attention towards health food.

The only way they could convince me is put health food in the junk form. And the cook just did that in the best way possible.

We only have to worry about the three of us (my daughter, her father and me) for New Year's Eve dinner.

My husband asked for a sticky rice recipe from his mom over the phone and tried to do it at home hours before the celebration.

It came out a bit deformed but very palatable and heavy on the tummy.

We didn't even have the traditional round stuff or the thirteen variety of fruits.

Had some grill pork steak and barbecue. Husband was supposed to cook his egg noodle soup however he got too tired to do it.

Disposable cups and plates were a must since the help had her day off already and we were not looking forward to cleaning up afterwards. It's like a regular dinner. Just right for the regular people. Happy new year to all. Looking forward to more good food.

I woke up earlier than planned today. My husband left me a mug with his own mix of coffee cream and sugar. I just had to boil water.

It has always been like this for the whole year. Since husband wakes up earlier and sometimes, leaves the house before I wake up, he leaves a mug of coffee mix for me. He even lives a pot of water waiting to be boiled to pour in my cup.

This morning, it would be the last for the year 2014. However, it will go on in the next year and the year after that.

He takes care of me through my cup of coffee. It was no problem at all since their kitchen is always abundant with leftovers - both a good and a bad thing.

I saw a container of mashed potatoes and another one with my mothers chicken mayo spread. I heat up some of the mashed (more like chunky) potato and didn't bother with the chilled chicken spread.

I didn't know that it would be really good.

I highly recommend it. The potatoes don't have to be perfectly mashed because I personally know that it's hard to do just that. And I've encountered one more last night. It was the second one I've visited in the QC area (the first one was Romulo's which was years ago).

The place looked ancestral with traditional furnitures and fixtures on the inside. However the facade was a bit on the contemporary on the outside.
I liked the Fiesta rice most of all. It was good on its own. The next one was the adobong baby pusit. Crispy bagnet was a general favorite on our table. The Poqui-poqui dish earned a good laugh with its name but we were quiet consuming the vegetable dish made of eggplant since it was really good despite the fact that I didn't like mushy things.
Ambiance: 5 out of 5
They got the "homey place" I think they're trying to give.

Taste: 5 out of 5
I eat out to try something different from our traditional dishes. However, I realized that I haven't tasted everything that our country has. Thanks to this restaurant, I tasted Ilocano meals that I didn't know they had.

Service: 4 out of 5
I think they are undermanned. However, the staff did their best to accommodate people.

Cost: 4 out of 5
Price was pricey but reasonable since they were all sumptuous since they were all cooked perfectly.
My daughter is the doughnut lover. She could tell if doughnuts were in the area.

People are into cupcakes for the past couple of years and doughnuts have kind of lost their appeal (but not completely). After trying out a couple of their doughnuts, I wanted to try everything they have. They offer adventure for the tastebuds and poses the challenges for people who are not so used to a contrast of flavours.

They put citrus and salty flavors along with the sweetness of sugar or chocolates or custard. They had a doughnut topped with potato chips! My daughter wanted the one that contained "calamansi".

I wish they could branch out because people ought to try it at least once. Warning though. It is really pricey. But in my opinion, coming up with these flavours and making them into fresh baked sweets (or sours or salties and all) deserves a higher cost. It was a risk they are probably taking for their never-before-encountered creations.
I prefer to dine out in the chairs and tables they set up outside the restaurant. One time, I opted to sit inside. However, it seems that there was no air conditioning. After that, I always take the "porch" seats.
The place is really homey like all their other branches. I think that's a big plus. Ambiance and taste are two factors that would make customers crave for more. And both of them are fulfilled by Cafe Breton. We stopped by MC Home Depot area for some Mediterranean food. My sister and I are both a fan of their cuisine. If only they were reasonably priced then we would have visited more often.

The only name of dish I remembered that night was Dizi, the lamb potato casserole which was smashed up in a mortar and pestle silverware.

The sauce from it was made as a dip for the soft bread ordered separately.

That's the downside. You see a photo in the menu of a dish and a siding but they are sold separately even if they all should go together.

Still on the look out for more less pricey but as enjoyable. <div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Chew On Thishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07186938437787030767noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1325388481027718008.post-91155303212428462102012-05-27T04:06:00.001-07:002012-05-27T04:06:07.978-07:00Yukino Hana, Resto And BarBlack walls - It was the first thing I noted when I entered the small restaurant. I arrived first and so I was alone at my table. There was another table occupied by four Korean nationals which actually made the place more authentic.

The food was kind of pricey with a P250 and up range. Since they refill the side dishes and the soup in our noodle dish, it didn't matter.

The waitress made a good lasting impression. She was very respectful to us (my sister and nephew arrived a little later). She kind of bowed very subtly every time we ask her for something or deliver something on our table. With that kind of service, who wouldn't want to give a good tip.<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Chew On Thishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07186938437787030767noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1325388481027718008.post-40423545574861165562012-05-01T05:34:00.001-07:002012-05-01T05:34:15.516-07:00Labor Day RewardIf I wasn't visiting Cafe France too frequently for my own pocket's own good, I would have a lot of good things to say about it. Pasta is so-so. Sandwich is kind of regular tasting. I wish I just bought iced coffee drink instead.
Somebody who was brought up with a lot of ideals and ended up with nothing to believe in anymore.

Just like his upbringing, the restaurant boasts of its pricey value just to end up being one of the ordinary stuff you eat (if you live in the Philippines). But of course, we don't get to eat those glorious "ordinary" local dishes that we have. And that is what you get from this more than a casual restaurant.

I would recommend the Gising Gising and Paella. By the way, their dishes are named after a cobblestone-lined street in old Manila or that of a person as elite-sounding as Crisostomo.
